Newcomers Connection
Making New Connections - There are many local families who have lived in our region for some time and have family heritage from other countries. They continue practising traditions and customs from their heritage. Other families might be new to Canada and are trying to balance the way of life they knew with the way of life here.
Connecting both our new and existing immigrants will build a strong network of individuals who can support each other and create an active, vibrant, multicultural community. We all know one or two newcomers but we definately do not know everyone.
The Goal - To address both the need for a strong immigrant support network and to be able to answer important questions. For example, where are newcomers from and what languages do they speak? The Newcomers Connection provides:
- new networking opportunities
- names of willing volunteers to support newcomers
- the spoken languages available to support newcomers
- demographic information on where newcomers are from
- benefits of a connected newcomer community
The benefits of a connected newcomer community are:
- prompt support will be available
- greater opportunity for newcomers to meet other people from their home country
- new friendships
- networking opens new doors and opportunities - even employment
- support will be available for those who need volunteer interpreter services
- expose yourself to a new language and culture
- volunteer benefits - Highly rewarding experience and a great opportunity to contribute to the well-being of your community.
