Background

The site currently occupied by the Domtex Development Centre was originally developed by the Dominion Textile Company circa 1915. The original yarn plant on the west side of Water Street dates from this period. The weaving plant buildings on the east side of Water Street came later, and the final additions to the yarn plant were made between 1957 and 1960.

In 1990, Dominion Textile Limited ceased operations in its facility. The Yarmouth County Industrial Commission assumed control of the building and have since redeveloped the facility in its current use as a development centre for the town and surrounding area.

The hospital recently completed a $45.2 million expansion to the facility, including new equipment and a helicopter landing pad for rapid EHS transfers to Halifax. EHS also operates its ambulance service from the hospital. Additional medical services are offered by local health professionals in the community.

C. FIRE PROTECTION

The Domtex Development Centre has an upgraded sprinkler system in the structure which is complemented by a hard-wired alarm system. Fire protection for the facility is provided by the municipal Fire Department.

D. SECURITY

Topography

The Domtex Development Centre is a 174,334 square feet facility in three buildings located in downtown Yarmouth. The site was chosen by the Dominion Textile company for its location on the waterfront, and the rail line that passed between the two groups of buildings on either side of Water Street.

The buildings occupy a level site approximately eight - ten feet above sea level at the bottom of a bluff. The bluff rises approximately 60 feet from the east side of the weaving plant to Main Street at the top of the bluff. Much of the site currently used for parking and storage on the west side of the yarn plant is the result of successive in-fill over the past 80 years. Today, the shoreline averages 75 - 100 feet west of the former yarn plant.
